Publications refer to written, visual, or audiovisual products of various forms, produced and publicly distributed through print or digital means for the purpose of disseminating knowledge, information, or entertainment. Publications include books, periodicals, magazines, newspapers, brochures, e-books, and many other forms, and are widely used in education, culture, commerce, and entertainment. The production process of publications involves multiple stages, including content creation, editing, design, printing, and distribution, each requiring specialized technical and equipment support.

Publications are physical products intended to disseminate knowledge and information. They consist of five main elements: content, mode of expression, physical medium, production process, and physical form. Content encompasses text, images, audio, and video, while media includes printed materials, CDs, and electronic devices. Legally, they are categorized as formal or illegal publications.

Publications are classified by publication cycle into periodicals (newspapers, periodicals) and ad hoc publications (books, pictures). They are also classified by medium into print, audiovisual, and digital formats. Traditionally, books and magazines were the primary forms, but modern publications have expanded to include electronic documents and online publications, forming a complete system encompassing paper, audiovisual, and digital media.

From the late 19th century onward, with technological advancements, publications evolved from printed materials to include records and microfilm. In the 20th century, this further expanded to include audio tapes and CDs. Since the reform and opening up, China's publishing industry has formed three major market segments: mass-market, educational, and professional, continuously exploring new media and dissemination methods.
